Autobiography of an Androgyne Earl Lind Books Reviews
- ...the more they stay the same. Autobiography of an Androgyne is the personally written diary of the author's struggle with his homosexuality at the turn of the 20th century. Although at times confusing (paragraphs and sentences in the author's version of Latin abound), by the book's end I saw only slight differences between what the author had gone through and what gay people go through today. Lind plays fast and loose with terms and I often had to stop and figure out what he was referring to; I certainly had to use a Latin/English dictionary. (An androgyne as used here is a gay male. A night of female impersonation is going out on the hunt for sex.) The author himself (not a spoiler) was castrated at 28 by choice and the book ends when he has reached 45. Although I read this for research, I found myself very sympathetic to the author's travails by the time I finished this ultimately fascinating social history.
