Observer Handbook 2013 David M F Chapman 9780981329291 Books Reviews

  • The Observer's Handbook is indispensable for amateur astronomers as well as professional astronomers. You don't need an updated handbook each year; however, you do need it for up-to-date information on solar system events such as planetary transits, occultations, etc. There are numerous tutorials to further one's knowledge or refresh fading memories.

  • I've been getting this annual publication since the 1950s and refer to it frequently. I've been pleased by its gradual expansion over the years.
  • Been reading for years always has good information. Needed more words before I could submit this here they all are
  • I have been getting this book since the early 1960's. I use it at work every day. A very valuable source of information.
  • Year after year, this comprehensive handbook, a labor of love, dedication and professional quality expertise, remains the gold standard. A must for any amateur astronomer, especially in the northern part of the world.
  • Previous editions of the RASC Observer's Handbook are nearly as useful a reference book as the current edition, especially when considering price. True, the date and time-sensitive information is certainly not particularly useful for planning an observation, but when it comes to gaining a sense of the rhythm of recurring astronomical events, you cannot beat it for the price. Also, the conceptual articles contained in the Observer's Handbook are informative and eloquent. If you're reluctant to purchase a current edition of the RASC Observer's Handbook, but still want a solid reference for your astronomy library, do not pass this one up.
  • The RASC Observer's Handbook is a wonderful, indispensable reference that I've purchased every year since the 70s. However, I just noticed that is selling used copies of the 2013 edition at prices ranging from $1,379 to nearly $5,000!!!

apparently imports this information from various used book dealers who advertise on-line. I've seen this phenomenon before. A book dealer is clueless about a price so he or she posts a huge amount to avoid under-pricing the item, and to see if anyone will bite. Other dealers wondering about the book's value will see the copy with the inflated price and give theirs a similarly absurd price. Pretty soon, there are several copies selling for 500 to 1000 times their value, giving the appearance that this is the legitimate price. Obviously, nobody will purchase a copy of this book at those prices unless they are both crazy and rich! A used copy of the RASC Handbook is worth perhaps a few dollars, if that.

Since I love the book, I'm giving it a 5-star rating. This price-gouging episode has nothing to do with the book itself, but is a result of used book dealer incompetence.
