The Dharma of Modern Mindfulness Discovering the Buddhist Teachings at the Heart of MindfulnessBased Stress Reduction Beth Ann Mulligan PAC Melissa Blacker 9781626259164 Books Reviews

  • I loved this book. It journeyed with me over the past 2 weeks—on airplanes, trains, buses. Such excellent company. Beth herself is excellent company, beaming gentleness, humor, clear understanding, friendly encouragement. I love the beautiful way she has framed this exploration within the 8 week class—the weaving in of her participants’ experiences of suffering, and her own. I will read it again, to soak in the kindness and wisdom offered within these pages. Thank you so much, Beth. As a fellow MBSR and MBCT teacher and practitioner, it is just a gift to have you as a companion, friend, and teacher on this journey!
  • Ms. Mulligan takes what could be a daunting subject and makes it very accessible, do-able and immediate. She makes it very clear that she is still within the process and refreshingly keeps herself off of any pedestal. The book is filled with wisdom, is immediately applicable and even joyful. Highly recommended.
  • Beth has written a completely accessible book for people wanting to understand mindfulness and how it is rooted in the basic teachings of the Buddha. As a teacher of the mindfulness-based stress reduction program for many years myself, I was delighted at the way Beth describes this program in such detail that I felt like I was in the classroom with her. Her clarity, humor, wisdom, and passion for helping relieve suffering for all beings is palpable. I highly recommend this book for teachers and students of mindfulness.
  • I like the engaging and practical way in which Beth Mulligan links modern mindfulness practices back to their underlying roots in Buddhist teachings. The book comes alive with multiple real person stories drawn from her years of experience in teaching MBSR groups and in primary care medical practice as a Physician Assistant. It helped me better understand how to apply these 2,500 year-old teachings to my own life in a transformative way. Although I have Mindfulness Meditation experience, I had many "aha" moments arising from the author's many insightful connections between the ancient and the modern. I suspect other readers as well will enjoy her narrative, easy-to-read style and be helped in their own lives by her insights and real life examples.
  • I love this book - pulls together and integrates so many pieces of mindfulness and ancient Buddhism. Beth Mulligan's gentle, spacious story-telling allows for the reader to the reflect deeply on the subtle wisdom of Buddhism and the intuitive gifts which come from daily practice. This is a new reference book for me.
  • I was vaguely familiar with Buddism and somewhat more familiar with Mindfullness but never made the connections between the two. This book clearly shows the relationship between the two, all the while letting me know that Mindfullness is NOT Buddism per se. I appreciate the author’s pragmatic down-to-earth style which helps to demystify this topic.
  • Incredible! Beautifully written with honest and valuable insight. As an MBSR teacher, I believe this book will become a "must-read" for all teachers of mindfulness-based stress reduction. Beth is an incredible human being with a massive and genuine heart... it all comes through quite perfectly in this book.
  • I love Beth and know her teachings to be from her personal and deep practice. Beth is an important contribution to the mindfulness teacher community. She walks her talk. Blessings to you.
